Alex Fernández, the defense attorney, has alleged possible medical negligence.
Allan Scalzo, a Businessman Imprisoned and Under Investigation
The businessman had been detained on May 17, following his connection to the 2019 murder of cattle rancher Haled Saghair. The prosecution contended that the crime was premeditated by Scalzo, who allegedly hired hitmen to kill the banana producer due to an alleged extramarital affair between Saghair and Olarte. A Santa Marta judge ordered Scalzo's imprisonment on May 4; however, due to his health issues, he was sent to a medical facility.
Martha Olarte Denounces Conditions in the Jail; Questions Surrounding Scalzo's Death
Following his arrest in Santa Marta, Allan Scalzo Gómez exhibited medical complications on the second day, experiencing fever, pain, and difficulty walking. As a result, he was admitted to the emergency room. His wife denounces the jail conditions, stating that cells were occupied by individuals with tuberculosis and were overcrowded.
Scalzo's family claims that doctors identified two bacteria, suggesting that the food provided may have been contaminated with these bacteria. According to his wife, the food was delivered in a bag to the entrance of the cells and received by one of the inmates.
Scalzo's Name Change and the Investigation into Saghair's Murder
Several months ago, Scalzo changed his name to Vicente Oliva Gómez. His wife gave an exclusive interview to Focus Noticias, discussing the potential causes of his death and those who may have wanted to end his life. She also mentioned that the name change was motivated by confusion with the Goméz and Scalzo surnames of his grandfather. "My husband changed his name because we wanted to obtain Italian citizenship," she stated.
Regarding the Saghair murder, Martha Oliva maintains that her husband was not the mastermind behind the crime, while his attorney asserts that it was not a crime of passion.
Allan Scalzo's Detention, Health Complications, and Untimely Death
After the murder of banana producer and cattle rancher Saghair on July 12, 2019, the prosecution initiated an investigation into Allan Scalzo, who was suspected of hiring hitmen to assassinate Saghair due to an extramarital affair between Saghair and Martha Olarte, Scalzo's wife. The investigation revealed the rental of an apartment across from Saghair's residence for surveillance purposes and the existence of chats between Scalzo, his wife, and the hitmen.
Allan Scalzo, a prominent businessman, owned several gas stations in Santa Marta, Barranquilla, and the Magdalena department. Following his arrest on May 17, Scalzo's health complications hindered the judicial process. Suffering from respiratory ailments, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (UCI) of the Clínica La Milagrosa.
On June 4, a judge ordered the imprisonment of Allan Scalzo Gómez, also known as Vicente Oliva. During his detention, he experienced severe respiratory complications, leading to his hospitalization. The hearings to legalize his detention and determine the appropriate security measures were postponed repeatedly due to his medical condition, but they were held virtually from the clinic.
The judge guaranteed the necessary medical attention for Scalzo, who remained at the Clínica La Milagrosa. In the early hours of Saturday, June 8, Scalzo suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest that resulted in his death. Scalzo's lawyer has alleged possible medical negligence, suggesting that the health complications could have been avoided with proper care.
Unofficial versions speculate about a possible bacterial infection acquired through contaminated food, although these have not been officially confirmed.
