Profeco Reports Decreasing Prices in Gasoline and Basic Basket: Commitment of No Real Increases is Being Met

Mexico City, April 14, 2025 – The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) is currently reporting a significant decrease in the prices of both gasoline and essential goods in the basic basket. According to Iván Escalante Ruiz, the Federal Consumer Prosecutor, this reduction demonstrates that the government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo is fulfilling its promise to maintain stable costs for these vital resources. Ruiz made these comments during the daily Conferencia Mañanera del Pueblo. «We are committed to ensuring that Mexican families are not being affected by rising prices,» Escalante Ruiz stated.

Decrease in the Basic Basket

Profeco is detailing the reduction in the cost of the 24 products that make up the basic basket. The average monthly price has dropped from $886.45 pesos in November 2024 to $845.99 pesos in March of this year. This represents a decrease of 4.6%. This reduction is currently providing significant relief to Mexican households, especially those with limited resources.

Gasoline Prices Going Down

The agency is also reporting positive news regarding gasoline prices. According to Profeco, a growing number of gas stations are now selling gasoline for under $24 pesos per liter. As of April 11, 82.3% of stations are already meeting this target. «The national average price is currently $23.65 pesos, which is directly benefiting Mexican families,» Ruiz explained. Profeco is actively monitoring gas stations across the country to ensure compliance with pricing regulations.

Profeco Actions and Verification Operations

As part of an inter-institutional working group under presidential instruction, Profeco is conducting verification operations at service stations in various states, including Chiapas, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Morelos, Puebla, and Querétaro. During these inspections, the Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment (ASEA) has already closed 34 gas stations due to environmental and safety violations. Profeco has also immobilized 225 instruments for irregularities, such as not dispensing complete liters. These actions are currently demonstrating the government's commitment to ensuring fair practices and environmental responsibility within the fuel industry.

«Who's Who in Essential Products» Program

Profeco is also providing updates on its «Quién es Quién en los Productos de Primera Necesidad» (Who's Who in Essential Products) program. From March 31 to April 4, the lowest price for the basic basket was found at $748.60 pesos at Bodega Aurrera Unidad Camino Real in La Paz. The highest price was $1,012.25 pesos at H.E.B. Saltillo República in Coahuila. Prices in stores in Álvaro Obregón, Durango, and Tijuana were also disclosed. This program is currently empowering consumers to make informed purchasing decisions by comparing prices at different retailers.

Tortilla Prices and Regional Variations

The average national price for a kilo of tortilla is currently $23.70 pesos. The lowest costs (between $18 and $19 pesos) are being found in Tlaxcala, Puebla, and Zacatecas, while the highest (between $28 and $32 pesos) are being seen in Hermosillo, Acapulco, and Campeche. Profeco is constantly monitoring tortilla prices to detect and prevent any unwarranted price increases.

Remittance Monitoring

Profeco is also monitoring remittance services. For an average remittance of 350 dollars, Remitly is currently offering the best exchange rate, delivering $7,259.49 pesos in account deposits and $7,217.77 pesos in cash. In contrast, Xoom and Pangea Money Transfer are offering the lowest amounts, with $6,980.67 and $6,969.45 pesos, respectively. «We are advising users to use the calculator available on the Profeco website to compare options, reviewing exchange rates and commissions,» the prosecutor stated.

Recommendations for Consumers

Escalante Ruiz is recommending consumers to utilize the tools and information available on Profeco's website to make informed purchasing decisions. By comparing prices, understanding exchange rates, and reviewing commissions, consumers can maximize their purchasing power and protect their financial interests. Profeco is remaining committed to protecting the rights of consumers and ensuring fair practices in the marketplace.

According to Gabriela Rivera P. (2025) in El Imparcial, Profeco is working hard to protect consumers' interests and ensure fair pricing in essential goods and services. El Imparcial.
