Barcelona Comic Fair: A Universe of Vignettes and Zombies Invades the City
The 43rd edition of Comic Barcelona is currently transforming Fira de Barcelona-Montjuïc into a vibrant epicenter for comic enthusiasts. Until Sunday, the event is expecting to gather over 100,000 visitors, offering an overwhelming selection of comics, exhibitions, and activities. The fair is not only showcasing classic and experimental comics but also providing immersive experiences for all attendees.
Zombies on the Loose: «The Walking Dead» Experience
One of the most striking attractions this year is a remarkably realistic zombie enclosure, promoting Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore's «The Walking Dead» albums (Planeta). According to Jacinto Antón (2025), a journalist from *El País*, the zombies are so realistic that they appear to be escaping and interacting with the attendees, creating a thrilling and immersive experience. This activation allows fans to step into the world of the popular comic series.
Minister Urtasun Visits Comic Barcelona
The event has also drawn attention from prominent figures, including the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, who visited Comic Barcelona this past midday. According to *Ediciones EL PAÍS S.L.* (1976), Urtasun explored the diverse offerings of the fair, engaging with creators and exhibits without being mistaken for one of the escaped zombies (*El País*, 2025).
International Guests and Tolkien Homage
Comic Barcelona is also hosting several international guests, including Chris Ware, who is presenting his work in collaboration with the CCCB, Kate Beaton, the author of the award-winning «Ducks,» and John Howe, the renowned illustrator of Tolkien's works. Howe's resemblance to Saruman adds an extra layer of charm for Tolkien fans attending the event.
A Galaxy of Activities and Exhibits
The fair offers a diverse range of activities for attendees of all ages. These include:
- Learning to fight with lightsabers inspired by Star Wars.
- Practicing medieval combat like Aragorn for Tolkien enthusiasts.
- Teleporting with Mr. Spock and Scotty from Star Trek.
- Taking a selfie with Aquaman.
Additionally, life-size superhero reproductions have become a major draw, with adults discreetly posing for photos with Captain America, shield displayed separately (Antón, 2025).
Exhibitions: Marika Vila and Pepe Larraz
Among the standout exhibitions, Marika Vila, the winner of the 2024 grand prize, is showcasing a historical journey through her work, deconstructing female stereotypes. Her «Mata Hari» series is particularly captivating. Pepe Larraz's exhibition offers a passionate account of his journey from a superhero comic enthusiast to a renowned author, featuring his work in «Blood Hunt,» «Star Wars,» «Spider-Man,» and «X-Men.»
Campaign against IA generative
The event offers visibility to the campaign of authors against the IA generative, for the damage it does to copyright.
Other Highlights
Visitors can also explore a labyrinth featuring Max's work, support the creation of an Alien museum (complete with a Nostromo spaceship laboratory), participate in an orc shooting game (with prizes), and preview the cover of the new Asterix album in Lusitania.
Cosplay and Vintage Finds
Comic Barcelona encourages attendees to embrace cosplay and immerse themselves in the world of their favorite characters. The fair also reminds visitors to ask for permission before photographing cosplayers. Among the attendees, Green Arrow, a member of the Justice League, was spotted, while a vendor offered t-shirts with the phrase «No estoy mayor, soy vintage» for those who appreciate classic finds.
A Comprehensive Experience
With 50,000 square meters of exhibits and activities, Comic Barcelona provides a comprehensive immersion into the world of comics. From classic comics to modern masterpieces, the fair offers something for everyone, making it a must-visit event for comic enthusiasts.
