Restoration of the General San Martín Cultural Center: A Porteno Icon is Being Revitalized
The Centro Cultural General San Martín (CCGSM), a landmark building of the modern movement in Buenos Aires, is undergoing a significant restoration. Designed by the renowned Argentinian architect Mario Roberto Alvarez, the CCGSM has been a vibrant hub for artistic experimentation, production, and research since its inauguration in 1970. The restoration project, with an investment of 35 billion pesos, is focusing on preserving the building's structural integrity, modernizing its technology, and improving safety measures («Clarín», 2024).
A Multifaceted Renovation
The restoration project encompasses three key areas: comprehensive restoration, technological upgrades, and furniture rehabilitation. According to Pablo Bereciartua, Minister of Infrastructure, these improvements will also benefit and enhance the urban landscape («Clarín», 2024). Jorge Macri, the Head of Government, expressed his regret over the building's current state, emphasizing its importance as a cultural heritage site and a space for nurturing talent (Macri, 2024).
Preserving History and Embracing the Future
The CCGSM has witnessed significant historical events. It served as the computation center for the 1983 elections, marking Argentina's return to democracy. It also housed the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP), which produced the «Nunca Más» report, crucial for the Trial of the Juntas. In 1996, it temporarily became the seat of the Buenos Aires legislature (Gómez, 2024).
Technological Modernization and New Spaces
The modernization includes installing state-of-the-art technology and adapting the building to contemporary trends. A rooftop terrace with a bar and restaurant is planned to create a new gastronomic and cultural meeting point. The Conservatorio Superior de Música Manuel de Falla will also find its new home on the top two floors of the CCGSM, centralizing its operations (Gómez, 2024).
Addressing Urgent Needs
Initial work is concentrating on resolving urgent issues, such as repairing the deteriorated facades and corroded ironwork. Structural problems on the upper floors have been addressed, and submersible pumps have been installed in the sixth basement to prevent flooding that could compromise the building's foundations (Gómez, 2024).
Artistic and Cultural Continuity
Gabriela Ricardes, Minister of Culture, emphasized the building's role as a place for debate, reflection, and gathering. The aim is to restore this essence, encouraging people to engage with and enjoy the spaces (Ricardes, 2024). While the restoration is underway, programming will continue in the Bajo Plaza building, courses and workshops will be offered online, and the radio station will temporarily relocate to Radio Continental studios in Palermo (Gómez, 2024).
Enhancing the Urban Environment
The restoration aims to revitalize the area surrounding the CCGSM, which currently becomes desolate after the closure of nearby commercial establishments. This initiative is expected to bring positive changes to the urban fabric of the Sarmiento and Paraná intersection (Gómez, 2024).
Preserving Artistic Heritage
The project includes the restoration of artworks by renowned artists such as Enio Iommi and Julio Le Parc, as well as the preservation of furniture designed by Alberto Churba's studio (Gómez, 2024).
Looking Ahead
The second phase of the restoration will involve the complete renovation of Halls A and B, along with the technological upgrading of the tower. The final phase will focus on equipping the Cultural Center with the necessary equipment for its operations (Gómez, 2024).
A Vision for the Future
Jorge Macri envisions the restored CCGSM as a space for fostering new talent, similar to the Teatro Colón. He believes that the state has a crucial role in promoting creativity and artistic expression (Macri, 2024).
The Unfulfilled Vision
According to Cuenta Moderna Buenos Aires, during the original construction, Mario Roberto Alvarez proposed demolishing all the surrounding buildings to create public spaces and plazas. While this ambitious idea was not fully realized, the demolition of three low buildings led to the creation of Plaza de las Américas, enhancing the area with a dry plaza (Cuenta Moderna Buenos Aires, n.d.).
