John Lennon's Guitar Sells for Record $2.9 Million at Auction
A guitar used by both John Lennon and George Harrison, which appeared in the Beatles' film Help!, has sold for a record-breaking amount at auction.
The Historic Hootenanny
The guitar in question is a 12-string Hootenanny acoustic model, manufactured in the early 1960s by Bavarian maker Framus. It famously appeared in the Beatles' film Help!, played by Lennon on the track "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away".
The guitar also features on the studio version of the song, as well as "Help!", "It's Only Love", and "I've Just Seen a Face". Harrison also played this rare model on "Norwegian Wood" and "Girl".
A Lost Treasure Rediscovered
After being lost for 50 years, the guitar was offered for auction in New York, where it sold for an impressive $2.9 million. The sale was handled by Julien's Auctions and took place at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City. The winning bid was placed over the phone, and the identity of the buyer remains undisclosed.
A New Record Set
The Framus guitar has become the most expensive John Lennon-owned instrument sold at auction, surpassing the $2.41 million paid for another Beatles guitar at Julien's in 2015. That model was a Gibson J-160E acoustic, which had been stolen from the songwriting legend and unknowingly purchased by a musician in the late 1960s.
A Testament to the Beatles' Legacy
David Goodman, CEO of Julien's Auctions, described the Framus as the most significant Beatles guitar ever to come to market.
"This guitar is not only a piece of music history but also a symbol of John Lennon's enduring legacy," he said. "Today's record-breaking sale is a testament to the timeless appeal and reverence for the music of the Beatles and John Lennon."
