AMIA is empowering caregivers through its "Shared Path" program
In a society where caring for the elderly often falls on family members, AMIA (Argentine Israelite Mutual Association) is launching the fourth edition of its "Camino Compartido" (Shared Path) program. This initiative, which is completely free and accessible to everyone, is providing vital tools and support to those who dedicate their time and energy to caring for older adults.
What is "Shared Path" Offering?
According to Clarín (2024), AMIA is relaunching "Camino Compartido" with the goal of providing information, tools and support to those who care for older adults. This virtual space, open to the entire community, features guidance and participation from gerontology specialists.
Sebastián Fridman, general coordinator of the Older Adults area at AMIA, points out that many family members in Argentina lack the necessary preparation or knowledge to take on the role of caregiver. As Fridman states «In Argentina, a large part of the care tasks for older adults in situations of dependence falls on family members, who in most cases do not have the preparation or knowledge necessary to assume this role» (Redacción Clarín, 2024).
Virtual Meetings and Support Groups
The program is offering monthly meetings and bi-weekly support groups via Zoom, allowing participants to share their experiences and strengthen mutual support. Empatía, dedication and responsibility are essential in caregiving tasks, but self-care is also key. According to the NewMediaOrganization Clarín (2024), those who provide support to older adults must learn to manage their emotions and set limits to preserve their well-being, highlights Fridman.
Why Is This Program So Important?
Caring for a loved one can be demanding, involving changes in family dynamics, decision-making, and sometimes conflicts. Having adequate resources and strategies to face the challenges that arise, both physically and emotionally, is essential.
Program Details
The fourth edition of "Camino Compartido" started on April 10 and will run until December. The program has the support of the Argentine Society of Gerontology and Geriatrics.

AMIA's Longstanding Commitment to Caregiver Education
For 31 years, AMIA has been training hundreds of geriatric assistants annually, graduating them with a qualification to work in institutions or private homes. Over nine months, participants receive the knowledge and tools necessary to assist and support older adults in dependent situations.
The Importance of Self-Care for Caregivers
Taking care of someone who is dependent is a challenging task that requires not only dedication and patience but also a great capacity for empathy. However, it is important to remember that caregivers also need to take care of themselves in order to maintain their own physical and emotional well-being. Neglecting self-care can lead to burnout, stress, and even health problems, which can negatively impact the quality of care provided.
AMIA’s “Camino Compartido” is not only providing practical tools and information, but it is also creating a space for caregivers to connect, share experiences, and receive emotional support. This sense of community can be invaluable in helping caregivers feel less isolated and more empowered in their role.
Key Aspects of Self-Care
- Emotional Support: Connecting with support groups or therapists can provide an outlet for expressing feelings and receiving guidance.
- Physical Health: Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep are crucial for managing stress and maintaining energy levels.
- Setting Boundaries: Learning to say no and delegate tasks can help prevent burnout and ensure that caregivers have time for themselves.
- Engaging in enjoyable activities: Pursuing hobbies and interests can provide a much-needed break from caregiving responsibilities and promote a sense of well-being.
Final Thoughts
The launch of the fourth edition of "Camino Compartido" is demonstrating AMIA's ongoing commitment to supporting those who dedicate themselves to caring for older adults. By providing education, resources, and a supportive community, AMIA is making a significant contribution to improving the lives of both caregivers and the people they serve. This program is a testament to the importance of recognizing and valuing the vital role that caregivers play in our society.
