Loretta Ortiz seeks to stay in the Supreme Court: ‘I am a great minister’
Loretta Ortiz, currently a minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), has officially launched her campaign to retain her position. Speaking at a forum in Mexico City, and surrounded by supporters, including members of the Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, Ortiz emphasized her commitment to transforming the judicial branch by bringing it closer to the people. «The task of the new Court,» she stated, «will be to guarantee respect for human rights and access to prompt and expeditious justice. I have the experience, the knowledge, and the vocation to serve Mexico.»

Commitment to Social Justice
Ortiz, who was nominated as minister of the SCJN in 2021 by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is positioning herself as a champion of social justice. According to David Saúl Vela (2025), writing for El Financiero, Ortiz believes that justice is not merely about technically applying the law but about applying it to achieve fairness for women, children, families, and workers. She affirmed, «I was, I am, and I will always be committed to this.»
Defense of Human Rights
During her speech, Ortiz highlighted her role in defending social justice, including her contribution to recognizing electricity as a human right, alongside health, education, and food. «Justice implies guaranteeing rights such as health, education, food, and energy. If our rulings focus on making these rights effective, we will be transforming the country,» she explained.

Support from Labor Groups
The event saw strong support from labor groups. Martín Esparza Flores, Secretary General of the SME, praised Loretta Ortiz for «always being on the side of the workers' struggle.» Víctor Velázquez, a representative of the Cooperativa La Cruz Azul, added, «As cooperativists, we believe in dialogue, informed voting, and accountability, which is why we support the popular election of ministers, magistrates, and judges. Loretta Ortiz has proven to be a fighter for democratic causes, and that is why she has our support.»
Controversies and Challenges
Ortiz's campaign comes amidst significant debate over the reform of the judicial branch. Her ties to President López Obrador and her vocal support for certain policies have drawn both praise and criticism. Some sectors view her as a defender of the people, while others question her impartiality and adherence to strict legal principles.
Statements and Affirmations
Ortiz addressed concerns about her qualifications and dedication by stating, «I am a woman and I am a great minister, I have been fair since I was little, because since I was a child I want to fix everything, and that's how my dad made me. I am an honest and prepared woman who is here asking for your support because she wants to continue serving Mexico.»
The Road Ahead
As one of the 64 candidates vying for a position as minister of the SCJN, Loretta Ortiz faces a challenging road ahead. The upcoming elections will be crucial in shaping the future of the judicial branch and its role in Mexican society. She is advocating for her re-election to continue her work within the Supreme Court of Justice. Ortiz aims to leverage her experience and her commitment to social justice to secure her position. She also defended the electric workers cause: «That is why, for 15 years, I have defended your cause, that of the electricians, and I will continue to do so. And today, I say it here, as a deputy, I shouted traitors to the fatherland to those who voted to privatize our electrical system.»
Transforming the Judicial Branch
According to El Financiero (2025), Ortiz believes that transforming the judicial branch requires a close connection with the people. She hopes to create a system that not only upholds the law but also actively works to improve the lives of ordinary citizens. Her vision involves ensuring that the courts are accessible, efficient, and responsive to the needs of all members of society.
